| Mellor Fourths lose in last game
Mellor Fourths completed their league campaign with a 2-8 defeat at home to AFC Oldham.
The scoreline flattered the visitors who used five subs to Mellor's one. It could have been different had the Fourths' leading scorer Maciek Sobiegraj converted two good chances half way through the first half when Mellor were leading 2-1.
To be fair, Maciek was carrying an ankle injury and the first chance saw him clipped from behind when shooting. On another day it might have been a penalty.
Mellor fell behind in four minutes when the defence failed to deal with a bouncing ball and a weak back header saw an Oldham forward score easily.
A minute later an inswinging corner from Sobiegraj crossed the line as Sean Standen pressured the defence and although Standen rammed the ball home the goal was properly MaciekÕs.
Who needs goalline technology when a club official is standing 10 feet away?
On 14 minutes however Standen scored a wonderful goal of his own. Billy Riley fed Shane Cliffe on the left and his cross found Standen who needed two touches but finally lashed the ball home from 15 yards.
Oldham's long throw-in caused consternation in Mellor's defence. But up front Cliffe's wing play and the free running of Mellor's Polish strike force of Sobiegraj and Kovriegie gave Oldham plenty to think about.
On 21 minutes Kovriegie shot over from Standen's assist. Then came Sobiegraj's two chances on 25 and 27 minutes. Both times he sprinted free of the back four but could not hit the target.
On 34 minutes Oldham hit the top of the crossbar. Mellor were undone with two goals in a minute on 39 minutes. The first was a back header from another Delap-style throw, the second a poor goal to concede, a defender misplacing a pass in the build up.
Phil Newton replaced Sean Standen at the break.
On 59 minutes Adam Sidebotham almost scored from a corner, his header just clawed to safety by the keeper. But Oldham immediately broke downfield and made it 2-4.
The last hour was torture for Mellor as the visitors added four goals. Jamie Philp replaced Billy Riley for the final 19 minutes and Phil Brown made one excellent save, turning a fierce shot against the bar.
It's in...straight from a corner
Take that! Sean Standen scores
Adam Sidebotham's header is saved.
