| Mellor Firsts and Seconds lose, Thirds triumph
with 10 men
Mellor Firsts underperformed at Rochdalians and came away empty handed after a 3-0 defeat. Keeper Gav Thornley suffered a head injury which required eight stitches after the match.
The Seconds hosted Old Alts in the Stockport Senior Cup, a competition in which Mellor's Reserves graced the final two years ago. This year's campaign however was cut short by a far stronger side which ran out 8-2 winners. The scoreline perhaps flattered the visitors, especially as it was only 1-1 after 49 minutes. But the men in black and white produced some lethal finishing late on.
Cody Wharton appeared in goal after a late change and made a string of fine saves. He was only pipped for the Man of the Match accolade by Lewis Jeffs, who was outstanding in midfield against an excellent side.
Wharton's first top drawer save came after 12 minutes, flying to hie left to palm away a goalbound shot for a corner. But from the flag kick Old Alts scored with an uncontested header.
On 42 minutes Paul Newman's wicked free kick from the left caused anxiety in the Old Alts defence but the keeper punched clear.
Paul Goodwin cleared what looked like a certain second goal for the visitors off the line on 44 minutes. But four minutes after the break another Newman free kick was flicked on by Craig Fairfield and Jeffs rammed the ball home for 1-1.
Two minutes later Wharton made another fine stop in a one-on-one situation but the ball rebounded to an Old Alts player who thumped it home for 2-1.
On 53 minutes Wharton was out again to clear with his feet when a goal looked likely.
Old Alts now dominated and Craig Fairfield had to clear off the line on 62 minutes.
Three minutes later the floodgates opened. Old Alts scored with a low shot for 3-1 and added three more in 13 minutes.
On 84 minutes Wharton saved a penalty and a minute later a shot from Maciek Sobiegraj was turned in by Andy Kuehl for 6-2.
Old Alts added two more before the end to run out easy winners.
The Thirds went to Santos and won 3-2. Sam Healey gave Mellor the lead. Then a Sam Parker penalty and an Andy Given goal put Mellor 3-1 clear. Santos pulled one back but could not get on terms. Mellor played the last 10 minutes with 10 men after Aaron Greaves was sent off for two yellow cards. Si Rawlings was Man of the Match.
