Firsts and Thirds lose, great wins for Seconds & Fourths
Mellor's Firsts went to South Manchester and were beaten by the odd goal in seven. Jack Parr, Danny Leibrick and Jamie Berrisford scored Mellor's goals. Mellor had gone 2-0 down but recovered to level at 2-2 before the home side imposed themselves again. Gav Thornley was Mellor's Man of the Match.
The Seconds were at Wood Lane against Barr Hill Firsts in Division A and continued the good work from their amzing 2-0 away win in midweek in the Wray Cup at Rochdalins by winning again 2-0. Maciek Sobiegraj and Ryan Yates were the scorers and Adam Barlow was Mellor's star man. Mellor fielded a bare 11 with Cody Wharton having to play a full game at centre forward. The Seconds play Bedians at Wood Lane on Wednesday in the semi final of the Wray Cup.
The Thirds, with a weakened side, lost 0-6 at Denton West End. They will be hoping for a stronger line up and a better result in Monday night's Whitehead Cup quarter final away at Hooley Bridge.
In Brabyns Park, the Fourths were also in a quarter final - of the Hellawell Shield - having beaten Old Chorlts 3-0 in the re-played Cup fixture on Wednesday night. Mellor began sluggishly against opponents AFC Oldham and went behind on three minutes when a throw in from the right bounced over Gary Brown and was tucked away at the far post.
The visitors continued to ruffle Mellor, snapping into tackles and winning most of the 50-50s. On 15 minutes the home side had a great chance to equalise but the ball was skied over from seven yards.
The visitors held their lead until the interval but Mellor started the second half the brighter. An Oldham defender headed a long range shot off the line in the 46th minute and six minutes later John Cosgrove headed in from a right wing corner. The ball was cleared away but referee Mel Gibbons spotted it had crossed the line and correctly gave the goal.
Seven minutes later Tom Bradley was upended in the box and Gary Brown smashed home the penalty for 2-1. Adam Axford then repaced an injured Gary Schofield. It was all Mellor now and on 64 minutes Mellor might have gone further ahead when Gary Brown headed over from a Paul Telfer free kick.
Dave Barron was introduced on 70 minutes to shore up the left flank and almost scored with his first touch. On 84 minutes a clearance sent Tom Bradley sprinting through the middle to outpace the Oldham defence and tuck the ball to the keeper's left for 3-1. Two minutes later Jamie McGregor made a vital save as an Oldham forward broke clear and tried to chip him. Then a minute before time Mellor's Man of the Match Bradley wrapped up the win with his second, sliding the ball just inside the keeper's right hand post.
The Fourths now meet Stocs in the Semi Final of the Hellawell Shield at Hillcrest Road on Wednesday.
