Firsts lose, all other teams win

The Firsts travelled to Old Stretfordians and lost 3-2. Craig Frisby and Terry Boon scored but the side again missed chances and should have secured a win. The Seconds switched their home fixture against Gatley from waterlogged Wood Lane to soggy Brabyns. Alex Wharton had to remove pools of water from the pitch but was rewarded with a good performance and all three points. Man of the Match Luke Warburton put Mellor on the way. Then Craig Fairfield decided to do an impression of Nayim's wonder strike against David Seaman from the half way line and crashed in a 40 yarder. Gatley pulled one back after the break but Martin Jackson scored a third and winning goal before the visitors struck again. The Thirds were also in Brabyns putting Parrs Wood Celtic Reserves to the sword 3-1, a measure of revenge for the 1-4 away defeat. Mellor took the lead on nine minutes when Steve Jackson's cross from the right found Sam Parker on the far side of the penalty area. He controlled the ball and curled a beautiful shot into the top right hand corner. Steve Jackson scored from close in a second from an assist by Maciek Sobiegraj and Man of the Match Matty Wyatt scored the third, a lob from 35 yards. Tim Phillips marshalled the defence well.

On the adjoining pitch the Fourths recorded their first win of the season 3-1 against fellow strugglers Denton West End. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when Mellor's defence misjudged the flight of a corner. Sam Healey thundered in an equaliser 10 minutes later. Danny Roberts made it 2-1 and Jon Cosgrove popped home a third after good work from Pat Boyle. Mellor's win owed much to a second half wonder save from Jamie McGregor who flung himself full length to tip the ball over the bar and deny what looked like a certain goal. Cosgrove and Boyle were voted joint Man of the Match.

Thanks to all the managers for the efforts they put in this week to field four strong teams and to all the players and managers who came back to the Marple Tavern after the games. There was a terrific atmosphere in the pub and that's how it should be.
