Mellor Firsts go three points clear

Mellor Firsts opened up a three point gap at the top of the Premiership with a convincing 3-0 win over local rivals Hazel Grove. It was sweet revenge for a heavy defeat away at Torkington Park earlier in the campaign. Jonathan Hunt, an own goal and Craig Frisby were the scorers and Ben Beer was Mellor's star man. That's six wins in a row in the league for the Firsts.

The Seconds are through to the next round of the Wray Cup after a 2-0 win at home (in Brabyns Park) against Moston Brook. Danny Mather and an own goal did the damage and keeper Scott Walters saved a second half penalty with the score at 2-1. Walters and Mather were named joint Man of the Match.

The Thirds lost 1-3 away at Strets, Andy Given scoring. The Fourths lost 2-4 at home to Irlam Steel. Defensive errors were at the heart of the defeat, with two poor first half clearances going to opponents who duly scored. Danny Roberts pulled a goal back with an excellent free kick (see picture) to make it 1-3 in the first half. The same player scored from long range in the second half. But Mellor could not close the gap.
