Mellor Firsts beat Abacus, other three teams lose
Mellor Firsts are making a real challenge again at the top of the Premiership. They came away from Abacus Media with a 1-0 win and three points, but the victory could and should have been more emphatic. Jonathan Hunt scored the goal in the second half and Ben Beer was Mellor's star man.
Mellor Seconds hosted Division A table toppers Bedians at Wood Lane. The men in blue have not conceded a goal all season but Mellor pushed them all the way. Dave Wilkinson was outstanding in defence. As early as the fourth minute his last ditch tackle put off a Bedians forward when a goal looked certain. And later in the half a superbly timed tackle robbed another Bedians' attacker of a goalscoring chance. In goal, Alex Barber was on top form too, making two excellent first half saves. The visitors enjoyed the best of the half. But Mellor might have scored just before the break when Adam Whittaker fed Kev Murray but the midfielder's shot was just too high.
After the break Bedians had a brief flurry when the hit the bar but in general Mellor dominated. Luke Warburton fired over and Kev Murray had a goal ruled out for offside against Danny Mather. Mather had Mellor's best opening but he was denied by Bedians' keeper. Jack Hilton replaced Whittaker and late on Chris Porter replaced Mather. Barbar made two more fine saves as Mellor pushed for a goal. Bedians' winner came seven minutes from time. In the last minute Jack Parr put a header just wide.
The Thirds slipped up again, losing 3-4 at Chorlts. Andy Given Scored all three. The Fourths lost 1-7 in Brabyns to Bedians. Danny Roberts scoring.
