Mellor Seconds push Poynton all the way in Stockport Senior Cup Final

The heavens opened but torrential rain at Woodley Sports did not dampen the efforts of Mellor Seconds who produced a terrific performance against Cheshire League side Poynton, narrowly losing 0-2. At times it was hard to tell which was the first team from the superior league. Mellor played the ball from the back and through midfield, whereas Poynton often knocked it long to their lanky and quick forwards. Tim Phillips, assisted by Dave Whelan largely kept the Poynton attack in check but equally Kev Murray and Luke Jubb found it hard to penetrate Poynton's rearguard. Mellor keeper Scott Waters was first to see real action when he saved well in a one-on-one after 20 minutes. But over the 90 he was not the busier keeper. On 24 minutes a Dave Moss free kick found Jubb in a good position but he could not control the ball. A minute later there was drama when Tim Phillips looked to have given away a penalty with a desperate lunging tackle. As last man he might also have seen red. But the linesman had already flagged for an earlier offence 10 yards outside the area. Poynton were dominating now and Dave Wilkinson's bravery blocked a certain goal, the ball spinning off his body over the bar. Mellor weathered this storm and ended the half strongly. Murray shot just wide from a tight angle. Then snaked out a leg in another raid and almost surprised the keeper who had to make a hurried save. Cassidy might have done better with a header from a corner. Mellor started the second half in a similarly confident manner. On 50 minutes Murray laid the ball back for Danny Hayes who did not set himself properly and looped a shot over the bar. Five minutes later a long range effort from Moss whistled past the left hand upright. Jubb fired over then linked up well with Murray whose drive from 16 yards was turned away by Poynton's keeper for a corner. On 58 minutes a rash challenge by Jack Parr was punished by a free kick on the left 15 yards outside the box and Waters misjudged the cross, his punch allowing a Poynton forward to head home. On 61 minutes Chris Porter replaced Murray and later Ryan Y ates came on the Danny Hayes. Parr and Jubb worked a good opening but then got their signals crossed left the ball to each other and Poynton escaped. A Matt Jamieson free kick from 28 yards was saved low down to the keeper's right. A minute from time Waters made a good save but a Poynton forward retrieved the ball from the goalline and crossed for a colleague to bundle in the second. Paul Goodwin, Rob White and Paul Newman were the non-appearing subs.
