Firsts progress in the Cup, Seconds and Fourths lose.

Mellor Firsts gained full revenge for Abacus Media's 2-1 league win at Wood Lane by dumping their rivals out of the Rhodes Cup 4-0 at the same venue. Boosted by the return of Barry Dalby, Mike Palmer and Liam Totterdell, it was an emphatic display of confident passing and ruthless finishing. Abacus are a well drilled side with a tight defence. But Mellor were patient and stretched the play by using both flanks well. The breakthrough came on 15 minutes when Ben Beer surged into the Abacus area only to be clipped by a defender for a clear penalty. Beer dusted himself down and coolly sent the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards. Abacus might have equalised on 22 minutes when Gav Thornley's punch found a visiting forward but his snatched shot went wide. On 29 minutes Alex Young produced some magic footwork on the goalline but his cross was blocked. Kev Murray was working hard up front and causing problems with neat footwork and clever link up play. But the Abacus defence held firm. After the break Mellor began to dominate possession. A Mark Oldham free kick on 47 minutes eluded everyone as it curved across the six yard box. Then Kev Murray's 25 yarder went straight at the keeper who made a routine save. A minute later the keeper slightly misjudged a diagonal ball and Mike Sharpe pulled it out of the air, swivelled and drilled it home from 10 yards in the sweetest of movements for 2-0. Liam Totterdell replaced Murray on 58 minutes and began to stretch the tiring Abacus back four. His run and pass to Barry Dalby on the hour led to a perfect lay off for Mike Sharpe, whose powerful shot was a foot wide. Terry Boon replaced the injured Matt Jamieson on 65 minutes and it was Boon who laid on the third goal, sprinting clear on the left to cut the ball back for Dalby to tap in at the far post on 79 minutes. Mellor were rampant now and might have scored three or four more had promising moves been completed with accurate final passes. It was left to Liam Totterdell to seal the win with a close range effort after Man of the Match Sharpe had outpaced the defence and delivered a perfect cross on 88 minutes. Mellor now play New East Manchester in the next round. The Seconds lost 3-0 at Newton Heath in Division A. The Thirds had no game. The Fourths lost in the Halliwell Shield to Old Strets away 3-1, Pat Boyle scoring.
