Seconds drop points in title race

Mellor Firsts had a free week. The Seconds took on Chorltonians at Wood Lane and dropped vital championship points in a 2-4 reverse. The opening was cagey but the visitors seemed more motivated and Mellor's usual slick passing game had deserted them. On 30 minutes Kev Murray had a shot well saved and seven minutes later Carl Brindley thought he had scored but his shot was deflected onto a post and out for a corner. On 42 minutes Mellor conceded a free kick and defended too deep. When the ball came in a poor clearance by Dave Whelan to the right wing was gathered by a Chorlts forward who crossed for a simple headed goal. Almost from the re-start Brindley hit the bar but the visitors held their half time lead. Andy Given replaced the injured Tom Sullivan for the second half and almost scored on 52 minutes, lifting the ball over the keeper but over the bar too. A second mistake on 55 minutes by the otherwise excellent Whelan led to Chorlts breaking clear and doubling their lead. But two minutes later Kev Murray's powerful strike from Paul Goodwin's pass was too strong for the keeper. Jamie Parker replaced Matt Jamieson and Mellor pushed on but left gaps at the back. Chorlts broke twice and established a 4-1 lead. Dave Wilkinson came on for Dunc Ellis and on 75 minutes Andy Given got behind the Chorlts' defence to slot home into the far corner from a narrow angle. There were further chances at both ends but neither side could add to the scoreline. The Thirds took three valuable points against Chorlts Thirds at Brabyns. The first half was goalless but Steve Jackson netted from close range from a pass by Jerome Rouse and Dec McManus added a second from Dunc Bray's assist. The Fourths went to Aldermere and won 3-1. They established a 2-0 half time lead with goals from Paul Robinson and Pat Boyle. Tom Bright added a third from 25 yards.
