First slip up at Newton, Seconds back on top of A Division

Mellor Firsts looked to have begun 2009 on top form as they raced into a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes at Newton. But even though they led 3-1 into the second half, a series of goalkeeping errors saw the home side turn the game on its head to win 4-3, scoring from all four shots they had all afternoon. Gav Thornley has saved Mellor innumerable times this season but this was not his day. It started so positively, Mike Palmer breaking clear from midfield to clip the ball into the top right hand corner with less than a minute gone. Mellor then hit the bar before Luke Jubb made it 2-0 after 10 minutes with a curling shot into the same place as Palmer had found. Four minutes later a seven man moved sliced open Newton's defence but Craig Fairfield fired over. It was one way traffic with Paul Swann raiding down the right, fed by Barry Dalby and Palmer. But two minutes before the break Gav Thornley did not deal with a high ball into the box and it found its way over the line. Mellor began the second half as they had done the first. In the first minute Jubb's 20 yarder was saved with difficulty by the Newton keeper, who fumbled the ball into space but no Mellor forward was on hand. Palmer then crossed for Paul Swann, under pressure, to fire over. Mike Sharpe set up Craig Fairfield on 55 minutes to make it 3-1 and the points looked secure. Liam Totterdell replaced Jubb but two goals in two minutes saw Newton level. Given replaced Sharp and Danny Hayes came on for Swann. But Mellor's woes increased when a left wing cross found the top right hand corner of Mellor's net to give the home side the lead. Despirte intense pressure in the last 15 minutes Mellor could not find an equaliser. Better news for the Seconds who returned to the top of Division A thanks to a 4-1 mauling of Old Strets. Paul Goodwin, Tom Sullivan, Man of the Match Jamie Parker and Dave Moss did the damage. The Thirds were unlucky to only draw 1-1 against high flying Deans in Division B at Brabyns. Jerome Rouse on his comeback debut scored and Russ Brookes was Mellor's top performer. The Fourths went to AFC Oldham and came away with a 1-1 draw too. Maciek Sobiegoraj scored and Aaron Purcell was Mellor's star man.
