Fourths go second

Mellor Firsts were rained off but the other three sides played on heavy grounds. The Seconds and Thirds lost but the Fourths took the spoils. The Fourths' victory over Chorlts Fifths 2-0 at Brabyns takes them to second place in Division D. The Seconds are still top of Division A but their position is now precarious after a 1-0 away defeat at Newton. Mellor started brightly and dominated the early possession but missed chances. The home side came into the game and Gav Thornley had to make two excellent saves. But Newton eventually scored with 25 minutes to go, although there was a suspicion of offside about the goal. Mellor threw everything at the home defence, with substitute Luke Jubb looking a threat. But they couldn't find an equaliser, even against 10 men when a Newton player was red carded with 15 minutes left. The Thirds took a shock 2-0 lead at home against Hollingworth OB's Seconds after just nine minutes but eventually lost 2-4. Tom Neil scored a cracker after a minute, rifling into the left hand corner of the net from 22 yards. Matty Wyatt was upended after a mazy dribble and Sam Parker slotted home the penalty. The visitors pulled one back on 11 minutes and the rest of the half saw an interesting tussle with both defences regularly under pressure. After the break, however, the visitors took control and scored three times without reply. Mellor put a tremendous amount of effort into the game against a quality side, with Paul Duckworth outstanding. The Fourths completed a back-to-back double over Chorlts Fifths but made very hard work of it. Tom Bright scored in the first half but missed three golden chances. Pat Boyle and Maciek Sobiegoraj also squandered good openings. The pattern continued after the break and with two minutes left it was still 1-0. But Tom Bright retrieved a wayward cross and jinked his way along the byline before delivering a ball which substitute Mike Barron crashed home. Paul Wild was Mellor's Man of the Match.
