Fourths edge closer to the top

With Mellor's top three teams rained off, the focus was on Mellor Fourths' bid to catch Bedians at the top of Division D. Their home fixture against Chorltonians was revsersed because of the weather and played at Hough End. The first half was dire with neither keeper asked to make a meaningful save. But Mellor came alive after the interval. Paul Duckworth opened the scoring on 46 minutes with a powerful shot in off the right hand post, after Ben Beer's slide rule pass bisected the home defence. Paul Robinson had a back post tap in for 2-0 after 55 minutes, following good work by Tom Bright. And Robinson returned the favour after 70 minutes with a strong run and cross which was dummied by debutant Terry Wilson for Bright to make it 3-0 from close range. Chorlts rallied and scored a consolation goal on 76 minutes. And Stu Ridgway had to make an important save to prevent a second. Tom Bradley came on for Mike Barron, John Ward replaced Aaron Purcell and Phil McGreal came on for Paul Telfer. The win puts the Fourths just three points behind league leaders Bedians but Mellor have a game in hand. Brief video highlights below.
