Firsts topple Old Trafford and head the Premiership as all four teams win

Mellor Firsts leapfrogged Old Trafford to top the Premiership after an emphatic 4-1 win over their title rivals at Wood Lane. Mellor had to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men after Mike Palmer was dismissed for a second yellow card after a rash tackle but still managed to add a fourth goal. Andy Given gave Mellor the perfect start after two minutes, rifling home from 14 yards after his first effort was saved. Old Trafford were always dangerous on the break with some fast and exciting dribbling skills. They hit a post after 18 minutes but six minutes later defender Craig Fairfield scored from 25 yards and on the half hour fellow centre back Ben Beer crashed in a free kick from 40 yards. The visitors pulled a goal back before half time when Gav Thornley failed to hold a stringing low drive from 25 yards and an Old Trafford forward bundled the ball home. After the break Given and Mike Sharpe missed three good chances to seal the game but the expected Old Trafford fight back never materialised as Mellor's defence and midfield contested ever loose ball. Craig Frisby added the fourth with a glancing header from Chris Coram's free kick in the 79th minute. "Superb", shouted manager Pete Jamieson and that summed up the performance. Craig Fairfield was named Man of the Match. Mellor Seconds maintained their position at the top of Division A with a 7-4 demolition of Gatley away. Luke Jubb(2), Jamie Oldham (2) Carl Brindley, Ryan Yates and an own goal secured the points. The 2nds have now scored 39 goals in eight games and have hit seven in three games. Scott Waters was Man of the Match. Intriguingly they played Gatley Firsts at Wood Lane this week in the quarter final of the Stockport Senior Cup. Kick off at 1.30pm. The Thirds are off the bottom of Division B after a 4-0 home win against Bridge Colts. Phil Brown, deputising in net for the ill Ken Guest, kept the visitors at bay. At the other end Sam Parker (pen), Sam Healey, Danny Hayes and Matty Wyatt from 40 yards did the damage. Tom Neil was named Man of the Match. The Fourths were involved in an extraordinary match of five penalties against Old Ashtonians.. Mellor led 6-1 with 10 minutes to go but the visitors clawed it back to 6-4. Mellor's scorers were Tom Bright, Adam Axford (2, 1 pen), Danny Roberts, Phil McGreal and Tom Bradley. Mellor Fourths are just two points off the league leaders.
