Seconds off with a win

A brilliant Andy Given strike 10 minutes from time fittingly won a seven-goal thriller and set Mellor's Seconds off to a new campaign with three points. Mellor played some delightful passing football on a rain lashed pitch. But defensive errors almost cost them victory. Old Ashtonians scored first by taking a quick free kick while Mellor's defenders failed to react and a visitors' striker rounded Matt Lloyd to fire home. Andy Given carried a threat down the right flank for most of the first half and his perfect cross on 14 minutes was headed home by Luke Jubb. On 34 minutes Given repeated the trick, and this time Ryan Yates at the back post was the beneficiary, heading in powerfully from seven yards. Dave Whelan replaced Johnny Townsley on 55 minutes and five minutes later Kev Murray broke clear only to see his shot parried away for a corner. Ashtonians equalised on 70 minutes, through casual defending. But seven minutes later Dave Whelan's left wing corner cannoned in off a defender for an own goal to restore Mellor's lead. Chris Porter replaced Ryan Yates, allowing Given to move to a more central role. But soon afterwards Ashtonians equalised with a 30 yard free kick which flew past Mellor's inadequate three man wall. It was end to end action now and keeper Matt Lloyd's safe handling was key to Mellor not losing another goal. Then on 80 minutes a lofted pass from Whelan was taken out of the air on Given's instep and with three defenders closing he coolly looped the ball over the keeper for 4-3. There were excellent performances from Jack Parr and Kev Murray in midfield and flashes of genius from Given that might have yielded more goals on another day. The Firsts and Thirds were rained off.
