Two games, two wins

For the second time in four days Mellor Firsts came from behind to take all three league points and maintain a 100 per cent start to the season. Newly promoted Whalley Range, on their home ground and watched by around 100 spectators, made it difficult and Mellor were not at their best. But the players gave everything, worked hard and were eventually rewarded with two goals in the final 14 minutes. Gav Thornley was involved in the game's first real action on 14 minutes, saving bravely in a one-on-one. On 26 minutes Barry Dalby set up Martin Jackson for a very similar chance and this time Range's keeper made the block. On 31 minutes a flick on to Mark Oldham's free kick found Craig Frisby at the back post and his careful right foot shot came back off the keeper's left hand post. Scott Cassidy replaced Chris Coram at half time. Two minutes after the break, Range hit the inside of a post from distance. Liam Totterdell replaced Mike Sharpe up front for Mellor on 55 minutes but two minutes later Range went ahead. A long punt down the middle was not dealt with properly and a Range forward fired home. Chris Porter came on for the injured Mike Palmer but the game was being played mainly in midfield and Mellor found it hard to create openings. On 76 minutes a threaded pass released Liam Totterdell on the right and his telling cross to the far post was headed back by Frisby. In the aerial challenge that followed the ball spun crazily towards the net and a Range defender, trying to clear, only succeeded in blasting the ball into his own goal. Mellor sensed a win was a possibility and looked the stronger in the final minutes. Totterdell was causing problems on both flanks. Eight minutes from time Dalby was blocked off when just about to pull the rigger. But he rolled the ball to Totterdell just inside the box and the forward created half a yard of space to roll the ball past a closing defender and into the net for the winner.

Jackson denied in the first half.

Frisby drives against the post

The ball spins into the Range net for 1-1.
