New League season starts

Mellor Firsts beat Norris Villa 3-1 at Wood Lane in the opening fixture of the 2008-09 season. Martin Jackson (2) and Barry Dalby scored.

On a carpet-like pitch Mellor and Norris Villa played out an excellent game. The result was never a certainty and the visitors dominated most of the first half. But Mellor's tough pre-season programme served them well and the team finished the stronger. Mellor started at pace and almost scored after two minutes when Terry Boon's right wing cross was sliced against a post by a defender. But after 20 minutes Norris took the lead after a header was cleared off the line and a series of pin-ball deflections. The ball broke to a Norris midfielder who rifled in from 18 yards. Martin Jackson equalised four minutes later with a deft looping header after good work by Boon on the left. And Barry Dalby might have claimed a half time lead for the home side but his header from six yards hit the keeper. Jackson put Mellor 2-1 up on 55 minutes after a slide rule pass from Ben Beer. Jackson turned his defender and poked home inside the keeper's right hand post. Five minutes later Norris hit the frame of the goal with a free kick but Mellor had a new urgency and were beginning to create gaps. Alex Young replaced the hard working Mike Sharpe and Terry Boon gave way for Scott Cassidy. On 70 minutes another Beer pass found Jackson bursting clear on the left and his cool low cross was turned in from five yards by Barry Dalby. Chris Porter replaced Chris Coram for the final 10 minutes.
